Coasting into the main pier at Caye Caulker

As the boat coasts into its mooring, the crush of people waiting to take the water taxi back into Belize City moves forward. Since it is my first second back, and Tina's house is about two houses down from the pier, I try to make it there as quickly as possible, to avoid any conversations with anyone at this time. It is not that I don't want to greet my friends, it is just KNOWING that it could literally take me 2 hours if I stopped to "hail"everybody I knew, just to get to Tina's house 2 houses away. And I had a ton of luggage in my hand. ( I failed miserably at this, by the way).

Trend's Beachfront Hotel
The first change in Caye Caulker, that I had heard about and seen pictures of, but had not seen with my own eyes, occurred right there at the bottom of the main pier as soon as I stepped off. On the left, was the Vega property. On the right, was the Wayne Miller property. What was once an open space - open beachfront land - (1 year ago) on the right had side was now the Trends Beachfront Hotel. No five star, but it is still beautiful and exquisitely maintained by Wayne. The hotel is a wooden building with about six or eight rooms and a cabin, right on the water and with the most awesome view possible in any latitude. It is painted in bright tropical colors (blues, pinks and white) and is definitely attractive looking.
View from the Sandbox Restaurant

On the right, what has for generations been knows as the Vega property, has now been halved and the boundary line moved in. Vega's property (as I have known it) was from the street (down from the main pier) on the left and bounded by the Popeye's Restaurant property on the right.

The "Vegas" and the "Popeye's" have had an ongoing feud of sorts for years. Rumor has it that Ron, the owner of Popeye, tired of feuding with his neighbor, Mr. Vega, did some research and found out that Mr. Vega was leasing a portion of the property he had fenced in. Ron - Mr. Popeye - being the good neighbor, prodeeded to find out who the owner was that was leasing it to Mr. Vega and bought the property. When he went to move the fence, Mr. Vega came out with his machete and the police had to be called. Of course, Mr. Popeye showed his deed to the property and the fence line was moved in halving Mr. Vega's property. So, Mr. Vega now has his erstwhile neighbor on both sides of his property. (:-) That's the rumor folks. I wasn't here. That was the story told to me.

Diane's beachfront home
View from Tina's verandah

After Trends, moving north from the main pier, is the Auxillou Trust property (thanx dad). This is where Tina's house is. And Diane's. And the homesite of my future beachfront mansion, scheduled for completion in October 2000 :-). When I left, this property was mainly vacant. In fact, Tina and I had homes on opposite ends of the property. She had a wooden building on the North Side and I had the mobile home on the South side of the property. Well, the trailer is still there. But Tina's wooden home has been demolished and replaced with a beautiful three bedroom concrete home. It is really nicely done, with humongous picture windows to be able to enjoy the view. I was impressed.

Diane's is also a concrete house, although hers only has two bedrooms. Diane's is immaculately done with beautiful tiles and finishing work everywhere. She lives downstairs, and she has a tennant that rents the upstairs year round. In any case, the view from the verandah is awesome. So far, I have been impressed by everything I have seen.
